In the Path of Great Bear is a story of Katie, an adventurous young girl, who rides her new bike up a mountain trail. Focusing on her ride she does not notice the 'bear signs' and startles a bear feeding on buffalo berries. The bear investigates the source of his disturbance and departs into the woods. When Katie retraces her tracks she finally sees all the signs the bear had left on the trail. The next day she rides to her secret spot on a mountain slope. While she is enjoying the view, she notices the bear far across the valley. She leaves the valley for the day so that the bear can have his space. Later that day, the bear wanders up to his favourite rub tree that happens to be Katie's secret spot.
Katie learns to recognize the bear's signs and how to respect his habitat so she can be safe in a grizzly bear's space.
